About The Guide
Tours are taken by Jim Walton, an experienced local guide in the Kawarau - Bannockburn - Carrick region with a formal background in history and social sciences and a comprehensive knowledge of gold mining and local history. This background enables Jim to relate the hardships experienced by the newly arrived European and Chinese miners to this harsh region.
As part of his wide ranging commentary Jim can provide an overview on other aspects of the settlement of Central Otago or explain how the alluvial goldfields were created or comment on the transition from lush forests to the arid landscape we have today.
